Meetings take place at 7pm in the Science Centre, Malvern College, College Road, Malvern WR14 3DF
Next Meeting will be:
- Wednesday 11th March 2020 – Alistair Liston – “Nimrod MR Radar Operator – A Personal Perspective”
The sky is dark and dull but there is a glow in the East that spurs you on to believe that it’s nearly time to go home. The inside of a Nimrod was so noisy that removal of the Amperlight headset was dangerous and painful. I always put yellow foam ear-defenders inside my headset to protect my ESM ears. The intercom system permanently buzzed at 400 Hz (according to my ESM ears), the light in the radar tent was provided by the very faintly glowing CRT display of the ASV 21D radar, the air smelled of hydraulic fluid, sweat, flatulence and the residual tang from the acoustics station. My coffee was in the cup holder outside the tent and available for the pranks (or theft) of the wet team who were taking turns to sit in the beam lookout windows and rest. We were hunting for one of the most elusive preys that can be described – a conventional submarine belonging to the Soviet Union. This particular boat had been sighted heading South-East, north of the Malin Head (North of Northern Ireland). It was our task to find it and track it if we could. We took over the search on the third day and we were all convinced that wherever he was now this boat was not going to be keen to be found.
